Risk Assessment Training to be held 7/16 at UW Law
Dr. Aron Schlonsky, the Factor-Inwentash Chair in Child Welfare at the University of Toronto, will be giving a presentation on Actuarial Based Risk Assessment in Child Welfare. Held at the UW School of Law from 10:30 am to noon, this program will provide an overview of actuarial based risk assessment and address how the concept might be used in individual child welfare cases, specifically examining how the concept might be applied to children returning home in a dependency action. This program is sponsored by CITA and Partners for Our Children and is free of charge. CLE & CJE credits pending.

New QIC website to focus on Child Representation
The National Quality Improvement Center on Representation of Children in the Child Welfare System has launched a new website featuring a draft QIC model of child representation, state laws governing child representation from 10 sample states, academic articles, and evaluations of chi dl representation.

Court of Appeals Issues Opinion in ICW Case
The Washington State Court of Appeals issued a decision today in the In re L.N.B.-L. case holding among other things that state law (RCW 13.34.070) is more expansive than the federal Indian Child Welfare Act and requires notice in a termination of parental rights case to a Canadian tribe which is not Federally recognized under the federal ICWA.

WA Supreme Court Issues Opinion in Termination
The Washington State Supreme court issued an opinion today holding that a termination of parental rights cannot stand absent a finding of current parental unfitness and that such a finding may only be implied if the facts and circumstances of the case clearly demonstrate that the omitted finding was clearly intended.
